Your Support Can Help Impose Strict Sentencing
During the 2010 North American Beekeeping Conference & Tradeshow in Orlando, the ABF Board of Directors asked attendees to sign letters asking a federal judge in Chicago to impose a strict sentence on Yong Xiang Yan, a Chinese honey exporter who has pled guilty to customs fraud involving honey. If you didn’t get the opportunity to sign a letter in Orlando, you can download one, sign and mail it. Get some friends to sign it, too. Do this immediately; sentencing is coming up soon.
FDA Issues Warning to Food Manufacturers
Commissioner of Food and Drugs Publishes Open Letter
The FDA's Commissioner of Food and Drugs, Dr. Margaret Hamburg, recently sent letters to 17 food manufacturers to correct labels on popular food products that the FDA believes misrepresent the products' health benefits, along with an open letter to the food manufacturing industry demanding they take action against "false or misleading" labels.
United States Honey Production Down 12 Percent
Lowest Ever Reported at 144 Million Pounds
A new report released February 26, 2010, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture, shows that honey production in 2009 from producers with five or more colonies totaled 144 million pounds, down 12 percent from 2008. There were 2.46 million colonies producing honey in 2009, up 5 percent from 2008.

ABF members Stan Wasitowski and Liz Vaenoski took top honors at the 2010 American Honey Show. The two were among 23 entrants in the show, which was held during the 2010 North American Beekeeping Conference & Tradeshow in Orlando, Florida.

USDA Proposes Changes to Conservation Reserve Program (CRP)
Comments Invited Through April 5, 2010
The USDA Farm Service Agency has prepared a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) to implement the changes to the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) enacted in the 2008 Farm Bill. The FSA is examining two action alternatives under each provision in addition to the no action alternative environmental baseline.
